Hello again coffee friends!  I’m back after a nice week of camping, hiking, fishing, cliff diving etc 🙂  One question I’ve gotten a few times is “how do I get quality coffee while camping?”  Many people think of using a percolator while camping, and predispose themselves to using this less than preferred method of coffee brewing while roughing it.  I have put together three easy camp coffee methods that will all produce a quality cuppa joe!  Oh yeah, all of these wonderful methods cost less than $30!

The first method is the travel french press.  Certainly, you can cart around your full size glass press pot, but why risk breakage and take up precious packing space?  I purchased this exact mug myself a month ago, and I must say that I am impressed.  It’s is a very unique design that offers great coffee brewing capabilities, even on the run!  Just throw a scoop of coffee in and add water that is 30 seconds removed from boiling.  Give it a stir for a few seconds, put the lid on and

wait 4 minutes before depressing the plunger.  Whamo…great coffee that stays hot!  Another thing I like about this mug from Planetary Design is that it has a little storage container in the bottom, perfect for bringing along enough grounds for another cup or two.  This way, all you need is some hot water for an instant refill of your favorite coffee! The second method is the Moka pot.  This is also known as an Italian Stovetop Espresso Maker.  Whether or not this is actually espresso is up for debate (not really since it is unlikely to produce 9 atm of pressure), but what is undeniable is that the Bialetti Moka Pot produces a quality cup of coffee.  The Moka pot tutorial video above shows you exactly how to use it, and how not to use it!  It is very simple to make excellent coffee with the Moka pot, add water to the fill line, add fine grind coffee in the basket, and place the pot over low/medium heat.  BAM…you’re done!  Five minutes later you are sipping on some espresso like brew.  Simply add hot water to lessen the strength until the desired taste is achieved.  Do not adjust the amount of coffee added!  If you don’t add the proper amount of coffee to the Moka pot, then the results will be dreadful.  The basket needs to be full in order to create the pressure needed to properly extract the flavor from the coffee.  Due to this fact, be sure to order the correct size of Moka pot.  You can always brew two pots, but never a half pot 🙂  (VIDEO TUTORIAL:  HOW TO USE THE MOKA POT)

The third and final method I’ll be talking about is the Aerobie AeroPress.  These guys invented the Aerobie Flyer, a flying disc thingy.  These same guys somehow discovered an awesome coffee brewing technique that uses a filter, and pressure together.  This is really thinking outside of the box, it looks like a giant coffee syringe, or worse yet…something Austin Powers would carry with him…not so groovy baby!  This method produces an ultra clean, yet flavorful cup of coffee.  It is great for camping, especially backpackers, due to it’s light weight and compactness.  Just scoop in the coffee, add hot water, and push it through with the plunger…donezo! Today’s featured coffees are from the Port City Coffee company, find them at PortCityCoffee.com I received a few varieties from them, and I shared my thoughts on a couple of them during the video.  I really liked the Kenya AA, but I would like to compare it to another coffee or three from the same region to get a real feel on how it stacks up.  Without this info, I still highly recommend giving it a shot, you won’t be disappointed.  I liked the unique flavor of this coffee from Port City.  I also loved the French Roast, but I’ve thoroughly expressed my appreciation of other dark roasts already, and wanted to share something different.  I misspoke during the video while talking about Port City Coffee, they don’t have any advertised ‘free shipping offers’, what they do have is a promotion that gives you a pound of free coffee after purchasing eleven pounds.  The weight accumulates, you need not purchase all 11 pounds at once.  You can also find Port City on twitter.   Don’t forget about the coffee drawing for free coffee from Berres Brothers Coffee Roasters!  One way to enter is to click the ‘Tweet This Post” link found on every post.  You will get one entry for each ‘tweet’!  Thanks again for supporting CoffeeNate.com with your comments, emails, and by visiting the sponsors’ sites!  Take care 🙂
