Bodum Santos Stove-Top Vacuum Coffee Maker

Bodum Santos Vacuum Coffee Maker

>> CoffeeNate Recommended! :) <<
On Sale NOW!

I have always thought that my favorite non-espresso brewing method was a toss-up between the French Press and the AeroPress…until now!  A couple of weeks ago I ordered a Bodum Santos stove-top coffee maker to see what all of the hub-bub is about with this siphon pot coffee brewing, and I’m glad that I did!

This video is an easy to follow demonstration on how to use a vacuum coffee pot brewer.  There are some variations of the siphon pot coffee makers, different heating methods, various filter types, and pots made from alternative materials.  I like this method for a few reasons…

  1. The coffee is always brewed at the ideal temperature (dummy proof)
  2. There is little effect on the flavor of the coffee.  With other methods the filter will remove desirable flavors!
  3. You can use a finer grind than French Press, this produces a fuller flavored cup :)

I highly recommend that you purchase a siphon pot and experience this great way of making coffee for yourself!  Try it out and experiment with different amounts of coffee, varying fineness of coffee grinds, and length of steeping time.  All of these things have an effect on the final flavor of your cup, and there is no right or wrong answers, take the time to discover what works for you!

I have had and prepared vacpots several times including a yama with a glass filter. I'd have to say it is the very tops for me. The flavor is so clean, especially with the glass filtered brew, it's unbelieveavle. Overall I'd pick this over the hassle of pulling shots, setting up an aeropress (which I love) or a french press. I try not to get stuck on one method but if I felt like we could keep one around and it not break we'd have a couple of these.

Thanks for dropping in Diablo! I agree, about using a variety of brewing methods, each have their own unique qualities. The vacpot is a sight to behold all in itself. I've had company over, and they look at it like I'm some kind of coffee freak….well I guess I am ;)

Hey Nathan, Another great episode. Can't wait until you invite me over to enjoy a cup of siphon pot coffee. Just curious about the time it takes for the whole process…how long it took you to go from thinking about having a cup of coffee until you were actually drinking a cup of coffee using the siphon pot. Like you said about drip coffee being so convenient…I often just choose to turn on the coffee maker instead of getting the french press going. Is the vac/siphon pot take about the same amount of time to brew as the french press? Have a great week Nathan!

Thanks D! We'll have to get together sometime this week. I'm going to finish this reno once and for all, and then I can finally relax a little…I hope. I would say from start to finish is less than 10 minutes, about the same time as making a pot of drip. I time lapsed the video because 3 minutes of staring at a pot is pretty boring! lol

Oh man! That tail end got me with the weeeehooo! Wasn't expecting that. The vac pot is one of my favorite ways that I've seen to make coffee. I've never tried it myself, but now it's on my list to try soon.

Cool demo Nate! I love my vacuum pot – I have the type that uses a butane burner vs. a stove top. To answer dkars question – I can be drinking coffee in about the same time it would take me to brew a pot of drip. I start by preheating the water in an electric kettle. While the water is heating up, I grind my beans. Then I fill the vacuum pot, add the coffee, and fire up the butane burner. I leave mine brewing longer than Nate suggested. I stir it as it fills and then I stir it again at one minute intervals. after the second minute, I turn off the burner and it takes another minutes to transfer back to the lower pot. I would estimate that the total time from start to finish is 6 – 8 minutes.

Thanks Todd! Coming from a siphon pot veteran, that is quite a compliment. I'm sure as my experience with this brewing method builds, I will also develop preferences such as yours. While I'm digging the taste, I can tell there is still room for slight adjustments and improvements.
      PS… When's Scott sending that brew? ;)

Thanks Todd for the info. i bet the butane really gets the water boiling faster than the stove top.
      Have a good one.

I timed a pot this morning – 12 minutes 30 seconds flat. That was from walking into the kitchen to pouring the first cup with a 2 minute brewing process.

        • http://intensedebate.com/people/nate_s nate_s

I tweaked my method and turned the heat down to 3/4 and it was much better. The bloom was huge! I think that the higher heat didn't do it justice and over extracted the coffee. Kinda like when you are baking and use water that is too hot on the yeast, it kills it! Lower temp, 200ish, and longer steeping time of about 2 minutes was great.

          • http://www.coffeecast.fm Todd

I think we need to form the society of vacuum pot brewers – a secret society – so let's not talk about it it further here. I am working on the secret handshake this week.

Hi there Tifanie! Thanks for stopping by, glad you enjoyed the video. :) I also love other brewing methods, but I like to switch from time to time to experience the different flavors that the various methods emphasize.
