Have a coffee question…ASK COFFEENATE!

Here are my thoughts about why a particular segment of coffee drinkers prefer to douse their coffee with additives like flavored cream, coffee flavorings, and excessive amounts of cream/sugar.  I would love to have you leave a comment below!  Thank you so much for visiting :D

Hi Coffeenate, All these additives flooded the market a while back and became immensely popular and available at convenience marts, coffee houses, and the supermarket so we all went buck wild LOL. I really enjoy my cup of coffee Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee with a little evaporated milk and sugar, sooooo good!

Coffeenate is correct here. I see you are using quality coffee(don't know if it's pre-ground or how freshly roasted it is) and that makes me wonder if you like the coffee taste at all ?

When I was younger I used to drink tea(don't drink it much anymore) with milk and sugar. Well when I look back then it really didn't matter if it was cheap Melrose's tea or some other quality ones they just all tasted the same “SWEET”. The sugar taste(one teaspoon) did just dominate the whole cup. Now the few times a year I drink tea(mostly when I have a cold) nothing but a quality tea will do it for me.

Why drink tea or coffee if you have to cover the taste with something else ?

Thanks for your comment Michanne! If that's the way you like your coffee, then that's okay, BUT you may be missing out. Have you tried brewing your JBM freshly roasted, and ground just before brewing? Give that a shot and brew via french press. Try it that way with no additives and see what you think.

I believe I may appear to have been too hard on those who use cream. There are coffees that are complimented well with a bit of milk, but if you are drowning your coffee in cream and sugar then chances are you are not using a quality coffee that is freshly roasted and properly brewed! Give it a shot and you won't be sorry. I'd be happy to help you!

I am a fan of this post – my coffee love started after i dropped the sugar. its a new world of flavor because fresh is best, especially when there is so much more to discover ;)

Thank you Justin :) It is up to us to educate the coffee drinking public! Why would you purposefully choose to drink nasty tasting coffee, and then settle for trying to kill the flavor with additives? I believe nobody would, but they just don't know any different.

Thanks for the post Nate, I certainly agree that good coffee has a nice flavor of its own, but I still use cream and sugar in mine. It makes it a slightly different drink but still allows the natural flavor of the coffee to come through in many cases. So I will continue to try coffee black, but for now its still cream and sugar for me.

Thank you for sharing Brian. At least you do it in a way that you can still taste the coffee. I think this is even more aggregious with lighter roasted coffees. The lighter the roast, the more unique flavor is present. I'm happy to hear that you at least taste it first :) Keep enjoying your coffee, because you are the only one who has to drink it!

I'm right there with you. I used to load my coffee with sugar and milk, then I discovered a whole other world of coffee. I haven't looked back since. I'm still trying to convince my girlfriend to let go of the milk in her coffee. Any tips for that, besides sharing some of the top notch coffee that I get.

Lately, I've found that my coffee creamer just doesn't last as long as it used to. I think my boyfriend may be adding some milk to his coffee on the sly ;)

Why ruin a perfectly good cup of coffee by adding pollutants to a refined, purified product. Personally, I do use a little cream, only to cut the acid content. If I do not do this my stomach gets too upset. If it was not for that I would go back to drinking it black and hot !!

I used to load up on the milk & sugar too (yrs ago) – until I realized just what Nate is saying: we're trying to mask all of the flavor that has been ruined by it being flat & stale! Now I spend a lot of my time convincing people who now “hate” coffee to try fresh roasted and retrain their minds and taste buds! Thankfully, I've convinced quite a bit!

I think it's funny how many drinks we call “coffee” in this country. Everything from good beans freshly ground and brewed, to pre-ground beans brewed (and possibly reheated), to sugar filled frappes which are really desserts more than coffee.

A lot of people add cream and sugar and flavorings to their coffee because they really want one of those dessert drinks rather than true coffee.

To be fair, I am drinking a Starbucks Frappuccino while writing this, but I'm not calling it coffee!

I love having cream with my coffee coz it gives it a rich flavor and keeps it smooth and yummy :)

Whew I got it now. Anyway Nate. I like coffee with coffeemate but not the flavoed kind. I may try the pumpkin though. sounds good to me right now.
